COVID-19 Update 21—Calendar, Graduation, Summer Meals
Posted on 06/04/2020

Dear Transylvania County Schools families,

The Transylvania County Board of Education voted unanimously at their regular business meeting on Monday, June 1, to approve a revised calendar for this upcoming school year.

The original calendar was revised to meet parameters outlined in new legislation from the North Carolina General Assembly, and the calendar requirements were a part of a larger piece of legislation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to those legislative requirements, the 2020-21 school year will begin on August 17 for students. See this and all the changes at tcsnc.org/calendar, where you can always download the most current school calendar.

This change in the start date and the new requirement of five Remote Learning Days for students has allowed for a change in the ending of the fall semester and the school year.  Fall semester will end on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, allowing for high school exams to take place prior to our winter break.

TCS 2020-21 Revised Calendar, Approved June 1, 2020

Spring semester will conclude on May 28, 2021, the Friday prior to Memorial Day. Remote Learning Days will take place on October 19, October 20, February 15, March 16, and April 30.   Students will be provided "online/virtual" work on the five Remote Learning Days and will not report to school on these days. (See recent news updates from the Department of Public Instruction for more information.)

We look forward to welcoming students back to school in mid-August and are grateful that we can finish the first semester before taking winter break. Additionally, we feel that completing the school year prior to Memorial Day is a benefit to our students and their families.

Also at Monday’s Board of Education meeting, tentative dates were set for graduation at our high schools. Students at Brevard and Rosman High Schools expressed their desire for in-person ceremonies, even if the dates were held in summer.

To honor their wish, the Board established July 30, July 31, and August 1 as tentative dates for in-person graduation this year. Holding these outdoor ceremonies still depends on public health requirements being relaxed in time, and we will provide more information as we approach the new graduation dates.

Finally, for families who receive meals from the buses at our community centers in the Rosman district, please check tcsnc.org/meals (tcsnc.org/comidas en español) for a revised bus schedule. The times for community center stops in that area will change on Monday, June 8.

Thank you for making a note of all these changes. We hope you and your family are doing well!
