COVID-19 Update 19—Grading Policy

COVID-19 Update 19—Grading Policy
Posted on 04/26/2020

Dear Transylvania County Schools families,

Learning never stops, and we appreciate all you are doing to grow every day.

While our teachers and students have adapted quickly to keep the door open for learning on Virtual Days, however, we also recognize that new challenges face everyone during this time of rapid change.

Facing the difficult task of trying to ensure consistency for every student in schools statewide, the NC State Board of Education recently released a temporary grading policy for this year.

The temporary grading policy is posted on the DPI website, along with a helpful list of frequently asked questions. Your child’s teacher and school can also answer questions about the temporary grading policy.

Elementary and middle school students will not receive traditional grades this year.

High schoolers who are not graduating may choose the option that is in their best interest—either (1) receiving a numerical grade or (2) a pass for the semester, based on their grade as of March 13. Those who were not passing a course as of that date may work to raise their grade to a pass or a passing numeric grade.

Additional Notes:

UNC-TV continues to provide educational programming Monday - Friday for grades 4 through 12. Their lineup for April 27 - May 1 is available online at the UNC-TV website.

Kindergarten Registration is now open! If your child will turn five (5) years old by August 31, 2020, now is the time to register at the school of your choice. Visit tcsnc.org/k or search under Academics on our website to find information and a convenient online enrollment form. We look forward to seeing our newest students in the Class of 2033 starting this fall!

School Lunch Heroes Day and Teacher Appreciation Week are coming up!

May 1 is National School Lunch Heroes Day to celebrate our cafeteria staff—who continue to distribute up to 1,800 meals every weekday in partnership with our bus drivers and transportation team

Governor Cooper also shared a video message this week to thank all cafeteria and transportation staff for their effort to serve all our families.

May 4 - 8 is National Teacher Appreciation Week, and we will proudly recognize our teachers and those staff members who make good things happen for students and our community every single day!

We invite you to send a thank-you note using pictures or videos on our “Thank You TCS” Flipgrid. Our students use Flipgrid for many school assignments, and we hope to see and hear from those who appreciate our teachers and TCS staff.

Thank you, and please continue to stay safe. We look forward to another great week of learning together!
