Dear TCS families,
Transylvania County Schools will have Virtual Learning Days on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday January 27 for all students. Students will learn from home both days. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of staff, parents and students.
The National Weather Service is now showing the possibility of ice accumulation and power outages starting this weekend across Transylvania County. Our area is under an Ice Storm Warning beginning on Saturday.
We will continue to monitor the forecast throughout the next few days, and will immediately let families know if there are any more changes to school operations. You can also follow our website and social media pages for updates.
Reminder: If students lose power on virtual days, they are given five extra days to complete their assignments once in-person school resumes.
------------------------------------------------------------------
We want to make sure everyone in our school community is ready. Please take these steps now, if possible:
Prepare your devices – Charge your phones, tablets, laptops, and portable chargers.
Monitor reliable sources – Stay updated through local news, the National Weather Service, and Transylvania County emergency management and county social media pages. We'll share school-related decisions and updates on our website, through our phone alert system and on social media.
Gather emergency supplies – Make sure you have flashlights, batteries, and blankets on hand. Stock up on non-perishable food, water, medications, and pet supplies.
Stay safe – If ice develops, roads can become dangerous quickly. Please stay home and avoid travel if roads are slick.
-----------------------------------------------
Tips from emergency management experts:
Please make sure you have plenty of food, water and supplies ready, including a way to stay warm if there is no electricity. Remember that you cannot use grills or propane heaters indoors because they produce a toxic gas that can be deadly.
It is best to only try to heat one room of the home, according to experts, who recommend putting blankets or towels over the windows to trap the heat inside, and having plenty of blankets or sleeping bags to keep warm.
Water pipes can also freeze and burst in these expected frigid temperatures. Try to maintain indoor heat (above 55°F), let cold water drip from faucets, open cabinet doors for warm air circulation, insulate exposed pipes, and seal air leaks in walls, especially near pipes entering the house. For outdoor pipes, disconnect hoses, shut off water, and cover faucets.

Our district was the only one from North Carolina represented at the summit. This invitation reflects the strong reputation of our School Nutrition Department and the impactful work being done each day to ensure students have access to nutritious, high-quality meals. It was an honor to showcase our efforts and commitment to serving students and families.

Tuesday night, the 6th and 7th graders acted out their monologues and scenes in "Curtain Call." On Wednesday night, the 8th grade Advanced Theater class performed two one-act plays at "One-Act Attack." Both nights were at Brevard High School Auditorium.
Productions like these help students build confidence, practice public speaking, learn to work with scripts and collaborate as a team. All the students worked really hard and it showed. Great job!

Dear Transylvania County Schools community,
Brevard High School Principal, David “Mick” Galloway has decided to announce his retirement from Transylvania County Schools, effective February 28, 2026.
Principal Galloway has spent the last 31 years serving Transylvania County Schools, and we are so grateful for all of his amazing work during this time. His positive impact on our community, our students and staff has been tremendous. This impact will continue to benefit our schools for years to come as he pursues his next chapter. We are wishing him the very best as he takes his next steps.
The following is a message from Principal Galloway:
“I am beyond blessed to have spent the last 31 years serving Transylvania County Schools as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. What began as a career quickly became a calling, and I am deeply grateful for the journey.
The relationships built with students, staff, families, and community members are what I will cherish most. Being able to work in the same school system I grew up in, while also raising my own family here, has been an incredible gift to me and my family. This community shaped me, supported me, and allowed me to give back to a system that has shaped my life from the time I entered the doors of Rosman Elementary as a kindergartner in 1977.
I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the colleagues who became lifelong friends, the mentors who guided me, and the students who inspired me daily. In every role I was fortunate enough to serve reinforced my belief in the power of public education and the strength of Transylvania County Schools.
As I close this chapter, I do so with a full heart and lasting appreciation. Thank you for the trust, the support, and the opportunity to serve such a remarkable school system. Transylvania County Schools will always be a part of who I am.
Go Big Blue!!”
